Absolutely agreed, I had some Pokemon reactions commissioned per your recommendation @Xyphien and I'm totally in love with them. Might even get a couple more made in the future :D
Here's what 2 of them look like if anyones curious:
Backlinks for keyword friendly articles I have written, promotion through webmaster communities, post exchanges with other webmasters are all the more typical things I'd do.
I'm also getting some members from promoting the site through my Natural Selection 2 server, and offering perks like a VIP...
Ruby & Sapphire will always be my faves, though I started with the OGs Blue & Red. Not a massive fan of the later gens, the last one I played I think was Black.
I had not heard of this either, but I didnt really pay much attention to the other free softwares available - just stuck with SMF.
Personally, I don't like the idea of depending on a free host because things like this can happen, even if its incredibly unlikely. I do wonder what was the cause.
I'm only working on a Pokemon fan forum with two of my other friends. With the social groups addon and the ability to style each individual group, we've set up a "sub-community" for NS2, so I spend a lot of time writing code to integrate our server with the forum as well.
I mean its a pretty solid layout, pretty hard justify changing it up just for the sake of it :p
I've always liked sites that use spites/2D graphics for their images, a number of Zelda fan forums I was a member of back in the day would style their sidebar containers etc with sprites of pillars...
PHP is mostly what I'm mucking about with at the moment, the HTML/CSS side of things only needs to be done every few months when we release a new theme, but I always come up with ideas that require PHP to get done.
Just my Xenforo addons. Kind of out of place on a Pokemon forum but whatever :p
User upgrades etc are bought with on-site points instead of actual cash, as I'd rather activity than money. If there was no activity I'd just buy posts anyway.
Fiverr is pretty good for it. Not so much for forum posts cos in my experience a lot of the sellers arent arsed, but I've had good experiences getting articles from there.
There are also a few people on Forum Promotion and provide writing services for articles.
I'll do both from time to time, but I'm starting to place a bigger emphasis on articles as they're pretty good for SEO.
I bought a lot of posts at the beginning of my forums lifetime just to get the ball rolling, but as time goes on it's something you end up doing less frequently.
I've been considering ad space but it's posts like these that discourage me from doing so. I don't really think many people seeing my ad on Facebook would be interested in joining a forum, for instance.
I have backlinks, my mobile page speed is decent, and I'm beginning to have good articles...
Fortunately I don't believe I've run into any issues where I've had to apply browser specific fixes. I remember when I was running forums 12-13 years ago I did, but things seem to have gotten a lot better over the years.
We'll try put out a new skin every time the sites version number hits another .5, eg 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, etc. This generally happens every ~5ish months or so.
3 right now, which is more than necessary but we've always run our forums together so it wouldn't be right for any of us to step down.
Even with our recent boost of activity 3 is still more than enough, it will be a good long while before we need to start seeking new staff.
