Reputation on forums!

What are your thoughts on reputation on forums?

I would never have reputation on forums. I don't like it. It seems like a popularity contest. I just feel it takes away from the forum.

I'm kind of used to having it around and it shows at a glance who has been active on the forum for a long period of time. It's a somewhat trustworthy idea, but it all depends on how the reputation is received as well. If it's automatic then it is not always a positive sign, but if stems from members adding to that rep then it shows that the member is well-received within the community.
